CANCELLATA A JEREVAN - o dell'errare nelle parole
Embassy of Italy in Jerevan / 15 October 2018
Under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic and on the occasion of the XVIII Week of the Italian Language in the World (15 - 21 October 2018), the Italian Embassy in Yerevan invited Carlo De Meo to create an unprecedented project that takes shape from wandering of the artist through the folds of the city.
“CANCELLATA A JEREVAN - o dell'errare nelle parole” it is an action of material collection and synthesis in the city of Yerevan, aimed at creating a large environmental installation made of sculpture, drawing and words.
CANCELLATA is an installation that speaks of (crossable) borders, of wandering (as a journey and as a mistake) and of the word (spoken, written, thought) in its form, sound and meaning. There are as many meanings as there are reading levels. Starting from the title, composed of words with multiple meanings: "errare" is the act of making mistakes, but also of wandering in exploration; "cancellata" (deleted) is that word that is removed by mistake, but it is also the "gate", the object that will be part of the installation, that is, the border between the Embassy and the rest of the city, that limit that marks the inside and the outside. Carlo De Meo's intervention aims to erase the barrier to give rise to dialogue and meeting, inviting the gaze of visitors to (un)ride it. The exploration of the city of Yerevan, during a week of residency, took the artist to the suburbs, to abandoned places and the most hidden ones, in search of what city life has discarded. In these urban interstices, Carlo De Meo collected the materials with which he composed the installation. Thus, from the experience of everyday life and the inventive overturning of objects, a large anthropomorphic sculpture takes shape which seems to want to climb over the gate with an athletic leap, invading the private space of the embassy and the public space of the pavement, putting them in close relationship. Under the long arms of this giant, a clear and direct message appears: ARMIAMOCI (LET'S ARM US), in which the R has been deleted (not by mistake, but by will), thus transforming the meaning into its opposite AMIAMOCI (LET'S LOVE US).
In this way, UNA ERRE CANCELLATA A JEREVAN, becomes the tool to send a message of dialogue to the Armenian capital, in a country that in recent years, with enthusiasm and energy, after years of conflicts and diaspora, is regaining its future; without ever forgetting, but with the firm will to look forward.
