Starting from a reflection on artificial intelligence, the artist realized a new set of works that investigate the relationship between artifice and nature, machine and sculpture.
Tightrope walker on the imaginary line between contemporary art, science and technologies, Donato Piccolo plays on elements with a keen sense of humour. Thus irony becomes a way to question the evidence, to demystify technology, to test the borders of the “thinkable” and to reveal contradictions and paradoxes.

“Thinking the unthinkable” is a metaphor on human limits and possibilities; it is a study on the cognitive aspects impacting our reality which make it difficult to distinguish what we see from what really is, modifying our idea of the relationship between subject and object.

“Thinking the unthinkable” is a big and complex motion installation that plays on dynamics, physics, electronic and electromagnetic principles by implementing them on a system of thought that considers the machine only as a pure abstraction of the human spirit.
A set of kinetic sculptures made of prostheses, bachelor objects and mechanisms, are part of a single dynamic "corpus", split and wandering on the edge of art and science; an artificial body that observes and talks to us, telling the story of a world upside-down: “All we cannot understand is inside our brain / All we cannot see is inside our eyes / All we cannot imagine is our future”

The “Thinking the unthinkable” project, curated by Isabella Indolfi, was achieved thanks the collaboration of diverse russian institutions, as the prestigious North-Western Branch of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts - ROSIZO - a museum and production center for contemporary art supported by the Russian Federation's Ministry of Culture - and the Cyland Media Art Lab, creator of the largest russian international media art festival.
Essential was the contribution by Galleria Mario Mazzoli (Berlino/Modena), that for years has followed the Donato Piccolo’s work.

“Thinking the unthinkable” premiered at the Youth Education Center of The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg on November 7th, 2017.
Now the project has already a busy schedule: next stop on December 7th, 2017 at the NY Media Center by IFP in New York with Cyfest, then on 2018 it will be the turn of MAXXI Museum in Rome with Media Art Festival and afterwards to the Dundee NeON Festival (UK); the rest of the tour is still in the process of being defined.
